Are you chasing that elusive dream of shooting a monster deer? If you want to get that monster buck and be the envy of your hunting friends, there are ways to do it, but they involve reversing your preconceptions of how to hunt, and challenge your patience and commitment; nonetheless, they can help your hunting tremendously. Let me share some deer hunting tips about the differences between hunting regular deer and true monster bucks.
Without the benefit of tremendous luck, the only way you’ll get a great deer is with months, if not years, of extensive planning and scouting, so that you are prepared for the season. I have personally scouted out and pursued specific deer for years before I could make that kill I was looking for, to give you an idea of the commitment required. The huge “war hosses” have a singular characteristic of never being caught in a position where a man could shoot them. These deer have an instinctive ability to find the correct location where they will be safe from the deer hunter.

The giant old deer manifest certain tendencies which require the hunter to be constantly thinking ahead in order to revise his own tactics for success. Their behavior patterns and movements are so different from doe and smaller bucks, that you can’t approach them the same way. In addition to the wisdom of age and greater size that they possess, they are also extremely careful in their movements. If a trophy deer has lived to the age of six, that fact alone is self defining as a statement of his survival instincts that have allowed him to elude capture. These giant deer generally will not panic when danger lurks nearby, but will often hunker down in a safe location and wait for the trouble to pass. Larger bucks use their camouflage and stealth abilities to avoid being detected, and escape in the quietest, least noticeable way they can, even sometimes swimming to get out of danger.

Bagging these elusive trophies will require you to set a much different mousetrap, so to speak. In the same way that a law enforcement investigator must carry out an interminable amount of routine legwork in order to make an important arrest, you must plot a specific long term strategy to outsmart that deer.
