Very similar to deer hunting, elk hunting does raise some challenges. Nevertheless, the habitat, the bulky size of these animals and their behavior give elk hunting a certain peculiarity, thus many photographers “hunting” for them as well with telephoto zoom lens. There are a few things you should know for a successful elk hunt. First of all, do everything you can to prevent the animals catch your scent. And the best way to do so is to stay with the wind into your face.

You can even use special sprays to cover the clothing and boots, wool socks smell. Scent eliminators are now available in many hunting supplies stores. Things have got to the extent that that hunters use only unscented soap before elk hunting. Such skincare products are made especially for hunters, and fortunately there is a pretty wide range of standard unscented soaps available. Some people claim to have serious improvement in their elk hunting after paying more attention to how they smell.

Be careful with wind changes because a sudden switch you don’t notice could destroy your hunting chances. It is important to periodically check the wind direction in order not to ruin your chances for a good shot.

You can use a caller in order to attract an elk. A cow call or a diaphragm work fine; such items have a high practicality and they are pretty easy to use. The right noise does attract the elk. The call will make the animal stop from the movement, which will actually create a better shooting opportunity for you. Nevertheless, not any noise is good for elk hunting, only the calls of their ’species’ work.

The animals are more alert in the bedding areas, and it is highly important that you be quiet. Safety concerns should also be on your mind when going elk hunting, particularly when you hunt on rough terrain; this is indeed difficult hunting territory. Moreover, you should think twice before shooting in hard to get places, because even if you put the animal down, how will you get it out of there? Think strategically under the circumstances.

Last but not least, it is essential to get on the elk hunting location early in the morning. After dawn and before dark are the periods when elk walk around. Scout every area where you go to identify trails and tracks. And at all times, pay attention to what we’ve suggested above.
